Friday, November 14, 1997

Birds of a Feather Social
7:00pm until 10:00pm -- Sand Point Park Pavilion

BIRDING COMPETITION

  • This will be a fun filled opportunity for contestants and their families to register for the contest, meet old friends, make new ones, join/form teams and car pools, and plan strategies.
  • Live music.
  • There will be local seafood, soft drinks, beer and snack food available FREE for registered participants [max of 2 free drinks].
  • Local birders and Wildlife officials will be there to answer questions and share their experience.
  • Events of the weekend will be explained.
  • Rules for the birding competition will be reviewed.
  • Sponsors will be recognized.
  • Registration fee is $50.00 per birding team (3 or 4 people).
  • "Unattached" individuals will be helped to form teams.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

  • This will be a fun filled opportunity for contestants and their families to meet old friends, make new ones.

  • Local birders and Wildlife officials will be there to answer questions and share their experience.

Saturday, November 15, 1997

BIRDING COMPETITION

5:00am until evening
  • Teams of three or four each will compete to count the most number of bird species.
  • Competition area is the 1,557 square miles of Brevard County.
  • Team tally sheets will be turned in no later than 11:00am Sunday.

Birding seminars and informative talks about local wildlife offered at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Information Center (these events start here):

  • 9:00-11:00 -- Beginning Birding Talk
  • 9:30 -- Habitat Walk (30 min.)
  • 10:00 - 11:30 -- Guided Black Point Wildlife Drive Tour
  • 11:30 -- Sea Turtle Talk (45 min.)
  • 1:00-3:00 -- Birding Field Trip (beg. & int.)
  • 1:00 -- Habitat Walk (30 min.)
  • 2:00 - 3:30 -- Guided Black Point Wildlife Drive Tour
  • 3:00-5:00 -- Intermediate Birding Talk
  • 4:00 - 5:30 -- Guided Black Point Wildlife Drive Tour

  • 9:00- 5:00 -- Guided Manatee Watch at Observation Deck on NE side of Haulover Canal on SR 3.
  • Walk on your own on the beach at Canaveral National Seashore.

Your whole family may enjoy participating in the Family Fun Festival - VI at the Enchanted Forest Nature Sanctuary

  • 8:30am - 4:30pm
  • Live animal exhibits
  • Guided tours through the forest led by experts in a variety of fields
  • Children's crafts and walks
  • Booths of many local nature and environmental organizations
  • T-shirts, crafts, books, food and drinks for sale.

Kayaking Tours from Dummit Cove

  • 9:am-3:pm - every odd hour on the hour
  • $5.00 each - Profits contributed to Merritt Island Wildlife Association.

BIRDING COMPETITION

  • Competition continues until 10:00am
  • All team check lists must be turned in no later than 11:00am.

Awards and Recognition Ceremony
2:00pm until 3:00pm -- Brevard Community College - Titusville Campus

  • Prizes will be awarded to all winning teams in each category.
  • All sponsors will be recognized and appreciated.


It should be noted that the 1997 Space Coast Flyway Festival is a "warm-up" event for what we plan to be a MAJOR ANNUAL FESTIVAL. We plan to start off small this year as we "get our feet wet."
