ECONLOCKHATCHEE RIVER
Spend the day before the festival relaxing on a one-way trip down one of the fines blackwater rivers in the state. Wading birds perch in huge cypress trees blanketed in bromeliads while raptors soar overhead as you thread your way through the Little-Big Econ State Forest. Alligators are a possibility, turtles a probability and lunch tastes great as you sit under centuries old oak trees and contemplate the river flowing by.

PINE ISLAND CONSERVATION AREA
The Pine Island Conservation Area is located on North Merritt Island adjacent to the renowned Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The trip will be led by Mike Knight and Lisa Smith of the EEL Program. This 3.5 mile canoe/kayak trail leads through a series of open water ponds embedded within an impounded estuarine marsh then out along the shoreline of the Indian River Lagoon to view the pine flatwood "island," sea grass, and salt marsh habitats, and into Sam's Creek, year-round refuge for the West Indian Manatee. Expect to see a diversity of wading birds and shorebirds along the trail, in addition to alligators, a common resident of this site. During the trip we will discuss salt marsh impoundment restoration and exotic plant species eradication issues being addressed at this conservation area.
