Birding and Wildlife Festival stresses nature-based tourism

Nature-based tourism is a renewable economic resource, and this fact is one of many that will be stressed at the fourth annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival Nov. 9-12 at the Titusville campus of Brevard Community College.

In addition to the many wildlife-watching events that help educate people on the natural beauty of the Space Coast, this year's event will feature several field trips. Among these are trips to the Lake Apopka Restoration Area, Ponce de Leon Inlet, historical Indian mounds and turtle mounds, and excursions in the Atlantic Ocean for seabird identification.

Three new seminars have been added to this year's program, including ones on the sooty tern, painted bunting and hummingbird.

A wildlife art festival, exhibitors and environmental displays will also be a part of this year's program.

Dr. Lew Ehrhart with the University of Central Florida will be the keynote Friday night speaker. Sea turtles will be the topic of his address.

Saturday night's keynote speaker will be Arthur Morris, one of the world's leading bird photographers. The topic of his address will be "Birds as Art."

"This non-consumptive pastime increases the economic impact that tourism has on our community, as well as on the quality of life of its residents," says Laurilee Thompson, chairman of the festival.

A Pentax spotting scope will be awarded to the four teams identifying the most bird species, with an assortment of prizes going to other teams.

Thompson expressed thanks to the many businesses that contributed to the festival and the agencies that supported it.
