SUMMARY 2001 FESTIVAL

The Fifth Annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival encompassed four days of coordinated activity during each day and three of the four nights. The Festival Steering Committee included Seminars and Field Trips that provided a historical look at the evolution of conservation efforts to protect and preserve our natural resources handed down from the past so that future generations may continue to enjoy and learn from them.

Field Trips, Key Note Presentations, and the Saturday Social were opportunities for birders and wildlife enthusiasts to enhance their knowledge as well as share their respect and enjoyment of the natural resources in this area. The most popular Field Trips were the Pelagic Birding Boat Trips out of Port Canaveral, Blue Springs State Park, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Interpretive Bird Watching.

Four Professors provided the Festival Survey and Evaluation from the Florida Institute of Technology School of Management.

Event Registrations and sign-ins as well as foot count determined that approximately 1400 persons participated in some aspect of the Festival. The terrorism attack of September 11, 2001 and subsequent Federal security actions, which included the closing of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Canaveral National Seashore, and Kennedy Space Center; somewhat affected attendance at the 2001 Festival.
