NAMED AUDUBON'S DIRECTOR OF BIRD CONSERVATION


New York, NY, January 28, 2000 -- -- Jeffrey V. Wells has been appointed Director of Bird Conservation for the National Audubon Society, it was announced today by Audubon's Senior Vice President of Science Frank Gill. Responsible for overseeing the Society's bird conservation programs, Wells is based in Ithaca, NY. He begins his new duties immediately.

"Jeff Wells is one of the country's leading young Ornithologists," said Gill. "He combines great knowledge and practical experience with an impressive record in conservation work. Jeff will contribute his energy and sense of purpose to Audubon's bird conservation efforts, which will expand continent-wide under his leadership."

Since 1996, Wells had worked for the National Audubon Society of New York State. While there, he was responsible for developing one of the country's first Important Bird Area programs, an initiative that identifies habitat vital to migratory birds. Legislation modeled after the program was enacted in New York State in 1997 - the First such legislation in the U.S. Wells also authored "Important bird Areas in New York State," the first IBA inventory in North America in 1998. In 1997, he was promoted to Director of Bird Conservation for the New York State office, implementing a comprehensive conservation program largely based upon the state's Important Bird Areas.

Prior to his work with National Audubon Society, Wells was associated with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, NY. While there he served variously as a Teaching Assistant, Research Support Specialist and Research Associate while pursuing his M.S. (1992) and Ph. D. (1995) Degrees in the Field of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Wells' work has been published extensively in numerous academic publications, technical journals, and popular periodicals on topics ranging from grassland bird biology and conservation, population changes in feeder birds, and the conservation status of neotropical migrants. He is a Chair of Partners in Flight's Northeast Working Group. He has also been the recipient of many grants and awards.

Founded in 1905 and supported by over 550,000 members in 518 chapters throughout the Americas, the National Audubon Society conserves and restores natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.
