Shifting Baselines
Keynote Presenter: Captain Peggy Goldberg
Golden Images, Inc.
Peggy will present underwater and nature photography from around the world, with an emphasis on Florida and our state's connection to the rest of the world's oceans and waterways. From the oceans to the springs, Peggy will talk about our "shifting baselines" - how our expectations of what we think is normal for an ecosystem is determined by when we see it. The birds we love so dearly to view and photograph depend on our waterways being there and being healthy. Peggy not only spends her time photographing the natural world, but also conducts photo and eco tours on her boat in North Central Florida, trying to teach as many people as possible about the beauty and uniqueness of Florida.

How Digiscoping Led Me into the Wonderful World of Birds
Keynote Presenter: Neil Fifer
Sponsored by Swarovski Optik
The development of digital photography and quality spotting scopes enabled Neil Fifer to extend his reach beyond conventional camera telephoto lenses into the wonderful world of birds. Returning to Sydney in 1999 after living sixteen years in Asia, Neil was captivated by the fantastic birds of Australia and began to photograph them. Now he will share his beautiful images, starting with the common birds of the Sydney parks and gardens, such as the Kookaburra, Crimson Rosella and Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, to the birds of the Australian Bush, including the Honeyeater, Fairy-wren and Finch and finally to the birds of the wetlands and waterways along the eastern seaboard of Australia (waders, egrets, ducks and rails). Neil will show raptors from the Sydney area and discuss his award winning photo "Gray Teals at Sunrise." He will also mention the work that went into the book Birds of the Warriewood Wetland and the Irrawong Reserve, concluding with some recent photos taken at the Ramsar site at Mai Po Marshes in Hong Kong, where he now resides.

The Owls of the United States and Canada
Keynote presenter: Denver Holt
President, North American Owl Research Institute
The owls of the United States and Canada are represented by 19 or 20 species, depending on what research you may be following. At this point the confusion lies with the Pygmy Owls of the genus Glaucidium. That aside, this talk will focus on 19 species that breed within these two countries. The presentation will be basic, with an overview of owls in general, stressing the difficulties of finding them. This will be followed with a breakdown of the differences between the two families; the Tytonidae (Barn and Bay Owls) and the Strigidae (all other owls). During the slide presentation, Denver will review identification and provide information about diet, breeding and non-breeding biology, habitat, and conservation. An important theme of the talk will be to try and interest the audience to go out and find owls on their own. To encourage this, the primary song of each species will be imitated with hopes that you too will give it a try. Can you hoot? Can you toot? When appropriate, Denver may, and often does, digress into other aspects of owl biology to touch upon more detailed information regarding evolutionary adaptations and personal anecdotes. If you learn a little about owl ecology and to recognize and imitate their primary mating songs, you too will be able to find owls.
